Zenith recently unveiled the latest evolution of its chronograph range, and it’s safe to say it’s causing quite a stir. Opinions on it were mostly directed at its looks, as it was quickly compared to a certain popular chronograph, sparking debate on the internet.
Are these comparative comments correct? Is this watch simply visually similar to its competitors? Or, is there more to it than meets the eye?
The history and evolution of El Primero over time
When you consider how much Zenith has contributed to the industry, how often they are overlooked and ignored, you see that they are severely undervalued. The El Primero is considered one of the most important movements in the history of horology.
Originally released in 1969 with the A386, it is considered one of the first automatic chronograph movements on the market, and based on statistics from the time of its launch, it was clearly one of the best. In the 1970s, Charles Vermot ignored the advice from headquarters to destroy all El Primero movements and tools and instead decided to store everything in the attic. He thus saved the movement and played an extremely important role in the continued success of Zenith and Rolex Daytona.

Zenith has an incredible collection of history-making chronographs. The story of the El Primero is one of the most important in itself, and this new development from the brand deserves to be talked about for more than just its visual similarities to other watches.
Zenith Chronomaster Sport – Features
The Chronomaster Sport we are introducing today combines all the best of the brand’s past into a thoroughly modern watch. The Chronomaster Sport is just the right size, with a case diameter of 41mm, case thickness of 13.6mm and a lug-to-lug distance of just 46.8mm. You’ll notice that Zenith’s new Chronomaster Sport has the exact same features as the DeLuca, just updated to ensure the watch meets modern expectations.
Now it’s time to jump into the dial and have no fear, because the historical references won’t slow you down. The first and most obvious recognition is through the subdials, as the soul of the A386 is already reflected through the matching color scheme and dimensions on the A386. One issue that is often debated is the date window, and love it or hate it, Zenith insists on the 4:30 position. This may shock some of you because balance and symmetry are usually my favorites, but I actually like the 4:30 date.
I think it works really well, in part because there’s enough going on on the dial that it doesn’t stand out. Thanks to Zenith’s attention to detail, ensuring its proportions are well proportioned, it blends well into and shapes the overall temperament of the dial. El Primero 3600 movement
Things start to get exciting when you flip the case over and we’re greeted by the new in-house El Primero automatic caliber 3600. First of all, this is a 1/10 second chronograph, rather than a chronograph hand moving around the dial. Dial every 60 seconds, effectively completing a full circle in 10 seconds. This is where the bezel comes into play, as you can now get accuracy down to a tenth of a second.
If we delve deeper into the subdials, we can learn more about the movement, since on the face of it, it’s not clear what’s going on. A small dial at 9 o’clock records the running seconds. The dial at 6 o’clock shows the elapsed minutes of the chronograph, and there is a small blue dial at the end that acts as a 60-second chronograph, which means that each time the chronograph hand makes a revolution around the dial, the small dial advances 10 seconds. Essentially, the last subdial is doing the work of a traditional chronograph hand.
